Charles Lim

SEA STATE 2: as evil disappears, 2012 SEA STATE 7: sandwich, 2015

The artist has been working on SEA STATE since 2005. With this series, Charles Lim from Singapore examines the contours of his country from the vantage point of the sea. He thereby gives a different perspective on the everyday environment: from hidden landscapes and disappearing islands to the imaginary boundaries of a future country. Through video recordings, photographs, and digital drawings, Lim brings into focus how people create land, which increases the sea level and causes islands like Pulau Sajahat to disappear.

He is a former Olympic sailor, and studied fine art at Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design in London. His performances, drawings, photos, and videos spring from his fascination for nature.
